The best cruise terminal in the world?!03.02.2022 15:23

Unexpected, but true. The cruise terminal in Miami (USA), which was built specifically for the cruise company Norwegian Cruise Line, received the Gold New Construction v4.0 award under the LEED system.

What this means and why this award is so highly regarded, especially in the US, we tell you below.

Developed by the US Green Building Council, LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, and LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainable development.

All about Norwegian Cruise Line

This certification is a great reflection of how the cruise company is making a positive impact on the environment and society through the Sail & Sustain global sustainability program. At the same time, the company realizes its vision: to make rest and travel as comfortable and safe as possible for all guests and around the world.

Frank Del Rio, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Also said: “We will continue to invest, design and evolve in accordance with this commitment, including further investment in the PortMiami terminal, where we are partnering with Miami-Dade County to add shore food capabilities by fall 2023. We are proud to be recognized as a LEED Gold Certified Sustainable Building Leader for our incredible new PortMiami Terminal B, Miami's Gem, the first cruise terminal in the world to achieve this certification as part of the new, more rigorous LEED construction. standards"

The Norwegian Cruise Line's 188,000 square feet (17,465 m²) cruise terminal has been designed with the latest environmental and building innovations in mind.

The team has created a platform that optimizes the terminal's energy efficiency, indoor air quality, water efficiency, use of local materials and resources, and more. Taking into account the high level of energy efficiency, the project was designed to be at least 38 percent more efficient than the average building. In addition to significant permits and water quality protections, the terminal includes protection against manatees and protection against the discharge of pollutants, and shore power is planned to be provided by autumn 2023.

“We are honored to partner with PortMiami and Miami-Dade County to build the iconic LEED gold standard terminal,” said Harry Sommer, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line. “The terminal was designed and built in collaboration with our local community in South Florida. Approximately 90% of all subcontractors, vendors and suppliers were local in the region, which contributed to local economic growth.”
