The coin laying ceremony for MSC World Europa took place in France!03.07.2020 21:48
The ceremony took place at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The first MSC liner, which will operate on liquefied natural gas, is scheduled to enter service in 2022.
MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, along with Aurore Bezard from Human Resources at Chantier de l'Atlantic, performed a traditional nautical ritual: as godparents representing the owner of the ship and the shipbuilder, they slid two coins under the keel, thus thus, blessing the project of the vessel for successful future operation at sea.
Pierfrancesco Vago said: “The MSC World Europa is further proof of our commitment to the environment, as it should reduce carbon emissions even more than many other existing LPG cruise ships. This fuel is currently considered the most environmentally friendly for marine operations. It is for this reason that we continue to invest in advanced environmental technologies to achieve our long-term goal of zero carbon emissions. ”
MSC World Europa will also showcase a new 50 kilowatt system that incorporates solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology and is used to generate electricity and heat on board. Such a fuel cell will be introduced for the first time on a cruise ship.
As a reminder, MSC Virtuosa is also under construction in Saint-Nazaire, a new project of the MSC company, the commissioning of which is scheduled for next year. According to sources, the Italian cruise company has confirmed 2 more orders for Chantier de l'Atlantic, which will run on natural gas: one for the MSC World class and one for the Meraviglia class.
