TOP 5 "Cruise films"05.03.2021 14:56

Cruise ships are often featured in films. As a rule, these are small cameos or inserts from panoramic video of ports and cities. Modern "Hollywood" associates Miami with cruises. Rarely, when a film, the events of which take place in the "sunny city", do without a video commentary on the seaport and many liners in it. After all, the cruise terminal in Miami is the largest in the world!

But there are many films that take place mostly or entirely on a cruise ship.

Since cruises are not currently available to most tourists from all over the world, we can enjoy watching the best "cruise movies". Especially for you, Four Gates has collected the TOP 5 of the best films of various genres. I wonder which ones have you already seen?

This film is not widely known as it was only released on Netflix. Of course, translated versions are already available on many pirate sites and even in normal quality. The film is quite interesting. There is drama, comedy, and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world!

Plot: Rachel is a determined young woman who has made a successful career in the advertising business. She has practically no equal, and she works a lot, but at the same time she does not forget about her personal life. Rachel is about to tie the knot with a loved one. But the wedding ceremony ends not with the kiss of the newlyweds, but with the fact that the groom runs away. In addition to this, Rachel's father comes to the wedding, whom she has not seen since early childhood. Frustrated, the abandoned bride gets drunk in a bar and decides that her wedding cruise should not be lost. But she does not go there alone, but together with her father, about whom she knows practically nothing ...

4th PLACE: Monsters on vacation 3 (2018)

Production company: Sony Pictures Animation

And again, the third film in the series, which takes place on a cruise ship. This time, the monsters will go to rest on a cruise ship, where each of the monsters finds entertainment to their liking. Many aspects of cruise life are well played in the cartoon. Dasha's family of werewolves learns about the children's club, where their children are safely handed over and for the first time, after their birth, they can relax while drinking cocktails on the deck of the ship)) The main storyline continues to develop around Dracula's sympathy for the captain of the ship - Erica. But everything changes after arriving in Atlantis.

What can I say, the fees speak for themselves. The cartoon is a must-see for everyone, especially for those who have already been on the cruise (a lot will be familiar to you).

3rd PLACE: The Legend of the Pianist (1998)

Liner: Virginian (fictional)

Duration: 120 minutes

Budget: 9,000,000 USD

Fees: 20 678 716 USD

Starring: Tim Roth, Pruitt Taylor Vince

Production company: Medusa Produzione, Sciarlò

This is a real epic film that unites not only an entire era, but also the complete life story of a gifted musician. In the course of the story, you will plunge into the wonderful world of music, friendship, love, suffering, passing before the eyes of the heroes for many years. This is the story of a brilliant pianist who was born and lived all his life on a ship, where he became famous for playing the piano. The narration is conducted on behalf of his friend, the trumpet player, who played with him in the orchestra.

On the first day of 1900, a baby was found in a lemon box on the Virginia transatlantic liner. The boy grew up and spent his entire life on a huge ocean liner plying between America and Europe. Having learned to play the piano in a mysterious way, the boy, named Danny Budman T. D. Lemon Thousand-Nine hundredth, became a real virtuoso and entertained the audience by playing in a restaurant orchestra. Stunning stories are associated with him, and his life has turned into a beautiful legend.

Separately, I would like to note the musical works of the recognized composer Ennio Morricone, which were awarded the Golden Globe Prize.

Quite a few people have not seen this movie, and if you are one of them, I truly envy you.

2nd PLACE: Titanic (1997)

Liner: Titanic

Genre: disaster film, romance, drama

Duration: 195 minutes

Budget: 200,000,000 USD

Fees: $ 1,843,201,268 (1997)

              + 343 550 770 $ (2012)

              + 691 642 $ (2017)

               = 2 194 439 542 $

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Bill Paxton

Production company: Lightstorm Entertainment

How could it be without the world famous and one of the most profitable films in history. Although, I would not really like to include a disaster film in the TOP, but you cannot do without it. Moreover, after the events of the "Titanic" a lot of time has passed and the cruise industry did not just step in front, but flew. This is reflected not only in the size and infrastructure of the liners, but also in modern and highly effective security systems.

Most likely, there is no person among our readers who would not have watched this film. The plot of the film is well played around the story of the crash in 1912 of the largest (at that time) liner - the Titanic.

In 1998, Titanic was nominated for an Academy Award in 14 nominations, resulting in 11 of them, including the 1997 Best Picture. Alongside Ben-Hur (1959) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), the film holds the record for the most Academy Awards won, and is often recognized as the best melodrama film.

1st PLACE: Gentlemen prefer blondes (1953)

Liner: Queen Mary

Genre: Comedy

Duration: 88 minutes

Starring: Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe, Charles Coburn, Tommy Noonan, George Winslow, Marcel Dalio, Taylor Holmes, Norma Warden, Howard Wendell, Stephen Gayray, Harry Carey Jr., Alvy Moore, Robert Nichols

Production company: 20th Century Studios

Dorothy Shaw (brunette) and Lorelee Lee (blonde), two singers and close friends, embark on a sea cruise aboard the Queen Mary across the Atlantic on their Paris tour. Both unmarried girls are looking for potential suitors. But if Dorothy prefers marriage for love, then Laurel is only for convenience. Meanwhile, Laurel is already engaged to millionaire Gus Esmond. Esmond's suspicious father sends a private investigator after his daughter-in-law, instructing him to see if Laureli will be faithful to Gus. Well, then the funny adventures of two girls begin on a luxury cruise ship with many funny situations. Many current stereotypes that are still relevant in our time are well ridiculed here.

I would like to pay special attention to the girls' outfits and the liner decor. And all this back in 1953. !!!

I hope by watching this movie you will get a lot of positive emotions and only good mood!

There are also many other interesting films of various genres that were not included in our TOP. These films take place in whole or in part on cruise ships.

Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 (2011)

Liner: Carnival Dream

Genre: Comedy, Family, Adventure

Duration: 87 minutes

Budget: 80,000,000 USD

Fees: 342 695 435 USD

Production company: Twentieth Century Fox, Regency Enterprises

Starring: Jason Lee, David Cross, Jenny Slate, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate

This is the third and final film in the Alvin and the Chipmunks series. The events take place on the liner of the American cruise company Carnival Cruise Line.

Since the film is focused more on the children's audience, the plot here is quite simple and straightforward. Chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, as well as their friends Brittany, Janette and Eleanor take a cruise with Dave. Of course, the main character, as in previous films, is the most perky and tries to draw all the attention to himself. This leads to events during which the chipmunks, Dave and Jan find themselves on the island. Further adventures await them, during which they all get to the festival "International music awards".

We recommend the film for the whole family to watch. It is quite funny, instructive and, of course, it contains many songs that all children love so much)))

Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)

Liner: Seabourn Legend

Genre: Action

Duration: 121 minutes

Budget: 160,000,000 USD

Fees: 164 508 066 USD

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Jason Patrick, Willem Dafoe

Production company: Blue Tulip Productions, 20th Century Fox

Although the film did not pay for itself at the box office, it became quite popular in many countries. It is the sequel to the more successful Keanu Reeves film, Speed. According to the plot of the film, police officer Alex Shaw and his girlfriend Annie Porter go on a cruise in the Caribbean on the Seabourn Legend. Unfortunately, the rest is interrupted by a terrorist who takes control of the entire liner. After that, most of the passengers leave the ship, but the main characters remain to neutralize the invader.

Poseidon (2006)

Liner: Poseidon (fictional)

Genre: disaster movie, adventure, thriller, suspense

Duration: 98 minutes

Budget: 160,000,000 USD

Fees: 181 674 817 USD

Starring: Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Jacinda Barrett, Richard Dreyfus, Emmy Rossum, Michael Vogel, Mia Maestro, Jimmy Bennett

Production company: Warner Bros. Pictures, Virtual Studios, Irwin Allen Productions, Next Entertainment, Radiant Productions, Synthesis Entertainment

The film Poseidon is a remake of the 1972 film The Adventure of Poseidon, known in this genre, based on the book of the same name by Paul Gallico. The action takes place on the cruise ship of the same name. The fates of several characters are intertwined in the film. On New Year's Eve, a killer wave suddenly appears, forcing the ship's captain to turn the Poseidon. The vessel still flips over, but before that the crew manages to send an SOS signal. Then everything goes, as in many Hollywood films, a lot of not the most logical actions, the consequences of which are decided by the main characters on the way to the surface.

Also based on Paul Galliko's book, the following were filmed:

Prisoners of Poseidon (1979)

On the High Seas (1997)

Liner: Westerdam

Genre: romantic comedy

Duration: 109 minutes

Stepbrothers Charlie and Herb go to work part-time on a cruise ship, where they plan to meet rich ladies. But, as always, everything goes wrong ...)))

The ship scenes were filmed aboard the Holland America Line. At the moment, the vessel has been transferred to the Thomson company and is called Thomson Dream.

Yucatan (2018)

Liner: MS Sovereign

Genre: Comedy

Duration: 129 minutes

The Spanish comedy film follows a group of crooks who board a cruise ship to cheat and steal money from an old baker who recently won millions of euros in the lottery and is traveling by ship with his family. Yucatan was mostly filmed aboard one of the cruise line Pullmantur Cruises and at the ports where the ship docked on its way.

* Unfortunately, the cruise company Pullmantur Cruises declared itself bankrupt in 2020 and ceased to exist.

Such different twins or "Jack and Jill" (2011)

Liner: Enchantment of The Seas

 Genre: Comedy

Duration: 91 minutes

Budget: 79,000,000 USD

Fees: 149 600 000 USD

Starring: Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino

Production company: Columbia Pictures, Broken Road Productions, Happy Madison Productions

Jack, a successful advertising agency worker, lives happily with his beautiful wife and children in Los Angeles. He is afraid of only one event of the year - the arrival of his twin sister, Jill, on Thanksgiving. Arriving once again to visit her brother, Jill turned his quiet life upside down. To celebrate the New Year, Jack and his family - along with their twin sister Jill - take a cruise on the Royal Caribbean International.

Although the film is considered the worst of Adam Sendler's career and received a record number of Golden Raspberry awards, many viewers loved it. How would you rate this movie?

An unforgettable romance (1957)

Liner: Queen Mary

Genre: romantic tragicomedy

Duration: 119 minutes

Hollywood romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

On a cruise ship from Europe to New York, former nightclub singer Terry McKay and attractive international playboy Nikki Ferrante have a romance. Both of them are not alone, and Nikki is going to America to visit his fiancée, but despite this, they agree to meet in six months on the upper observation deck of the Empire State Building, so that they will never part. Hurrying to meet Niccolo, Terry stares at a skyscraper and gets hit by a car ...

Little known fact: Like his character, Grant met and fell in love with his third wife on the ship, Queen Mary.

The Parent Trap (1998)

Liner: Queen Elizabeth

Their parents divorced many years ago, and by agreement between them, Halle stayed with her father, and Annie with her mother. Although, according to the plot, the heroes travel on the liner Queen Elizabeth, the cruise company Cunard Line, most of the filming took place on another liner - Queen Mary, moored in Long Beach, California.
