Royal Caribbean intrigued by the construction of a new liner!17.06.2021 19:08
Royal Caribbean has announced the official start of construction on its newest cruise ship - Icon of the Seas!

On Monday June 14th, Royal Caribbean International celebrated the start of construction on its first Icon Class liner in Meyer-Turku, which will carry the Icon of the Seas name when it debuts in 2023.

The construction began with a steel cutting ceremony from the same Meyer Turku shipyard, which is the same shipyard that built several Royal Caribbean ships, including the Allure and the Oasis of the Seas.

Icon Class vessels will be the newest class of Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

Three Icon class ships have been ordered:

 - Icon of the Seas in Q3 2023;
 - The second liner (name not yet known) in the 2nd quarter of 2025;
 - The third liner (name not yet known) in the 2nd quarter of 2026;

Little is known about the Icon class yet, but according to SEC filings from Royal Caribbean Group in April 2021, the new Icon Class ships will carry around 5,600 passengers.

This will make the Icon-class ships larger than the Quantum-class ships, but slightly smaller than the Oasis-class ships, and have a completely new futuristic design from Royal Caribbean.

Icon of the Seas will debut in fall 2023 and will be the first of three cruise line ships to run on LNG (liquefied natural gas). LNG and additional environmentally friendly applications on a modern vessel, such as connecting to an onshore power source, will increase energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint. More details on Icon's advanced environmental technologies will be revealed in the future.

The ceremony was attended by Richard Fine, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group; Michael Bailey, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International; and Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku.

“We are committed to making clean energy at sea a reality - and soon to become the norm, and we are delighted to see something truly different from other ships under construction,” said Michael Bailey, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.

“Our decades of work in ocean conservation, energy efficiency and continual improvement will be evident throughout the Icon class. We look forward to unlocking more opportunities that will change the world of cruising. "
