Royal Caribbean has officially welcomed Icon of the Seas, the newest and largest ship ever built, into its fleet.
The Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku handed over the world's largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas to the customer company Royal Caribbean International.

1. A greener approach using LNG and fuel cell technologies.
Setting a new standard for sustainability, Icon of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean's first ship to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cell technology. According to the cruise operator, this is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 30% and sulfur emissions by almost 100%.
2. Icon of the Seas will have eight blocks.
The 20-story ship will feature eight distinct areas including Thrill Island, Chill Island, Central Park, Royal Promenade and The Hideaway. All of them are aimed at providing guests with a different experience.
3. Construction cost 2 billion dollars.
According to Royal Caribbean, the estimated construction cost for Icon of the Seas is $2 billion. By comparison, Royal Caribbean's previous record-breaking ship, Allure of the Seas, cost about $1.43 billion to build.
4. Maximum capacity records.
Breaking new ground, the ship will have a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers, surpassing the previous record of Wonder of the Seas, which had a maximum capacity of 6,988 guests.
5. Booking records.
According to Royal Caribbean, bookings for Icon of the Seas have broken records, with the company experiencing its biggest booking day ever in October. While exact numbers have not been released, the cruise operator reported the highest number of bookings in its 53-year history.
The ship will debut in Miami and will operate seven-night Caribbean cruises through 2024. The first cruises will begin in January. Their cost is from 1,729 € per person per week in an inside cabin (247 € / day). Tips are not included.
