Romania and Bulgaria join the Schengen zone!01.04.2024 22:51
On the night of March 31, border controls completely ceased to operate at the air and sea borders of Romania, Bulgaria and the EU. But checks will continue at land borders. The decision to completely abolish controls will have to be made by the EU Council. In Sofia and Bucharest they hope that the final verdict will be delivered before the end of the year.

Previously, Austria vetoed the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen zone. There they expressed fears that a flow of refugees could flow from the countries to the EU. Negotiations between the states are ongoing.

Consultation on any questions

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated Romania and Bulgaria on “joining the Schengen family.” She stressed that this is a great success for the people of both countries and also benefits millions of EU citizens across Europe.

“We are making the Schengen area even stronger,” emphasized the head of the European Commission

Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union in 2007, and already in 2011 the European Commission expressed its readiness to integrate the countries into the Schengen area. But EU members have blocked the move year after year due to problems in Bulgaria and Romania with corruption and fears that the border will not be properly secured.
