Viking names its new ship!12.12.2024 23:05
According to a press release, Viking officially named its new ocean vessel Viking Vela at a ceremony in Trieste, Italy last Thursday, December 5th.

Viking Vela is a cruise ship with a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300. It has 499 cabins and can accommodate 998 passengers, an increase from previous Viking ships that had a capacity of 930 guests.

>>>More about Viking Vela:

The event celebrated Viking’s long-standing partnership with Fincantieri, headquartered in Trieste. Ivana Elis, vice president and project manager of Fincantieri’s cruise business unit, acted as the vessel’s ceremonial godmother. She has played a key role in the design of Viking’s ocean fleet for the past 12 years.

“We are proud to welcome Viking Vela to our growing, award-winning fleet. “With Fincantieri as our partner, we believe we have built the world’s most elegant fleet of small ocean-going vessels,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “We thank Ivana Elise for being the godmother of Viking Vela. In her role at Fincantieri, she has cared for our ocean-going vessels during their construction just as a godmother would, and we are very grateful for her contribution as a member of the extended Viking family.”

During the ceremony, Elise was presented with the Viking broad axe previously used for the naming of Viking Saturn in June 2023. Elise then pressed a button to release a bottle of Norwegian aquavit, which was ceremoniously smashed against the hull of the ship. The event also featured performances by renowned soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø and Italian singer Alessandro Safina, celebrating Norwegian and Italian cultures through music.

In 2012, Alice was appointed Construction Manager for Viking's first ocean-going vessel, Viking Star. A graduate of the University of Genoa with a Master's degree in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering, she began her career at Fincantieri in 1985. Her early work focused on noise and vibration engineering for naval vessels and submarines. She later held several management positions in hydrodynamics, shipbuilding and production engineering in the Merchant Division.
