Whale watching. One of the most important tourist activities in this part of the island, as the proximity to arctic waters means that there are many different species of whales swimming in the area, from the hunchback to the majestic blue whales.
Arctic Botanical Garden. It is the northernmost botanical garden in the world, founded in 1912, and one of the jewels of Akureyri. The gardens are renowned for their extensive plant collection covering almost every known species in Iceland as well as thousands from abroad. Beautiful paths lead visitors around it and provide beautiful scenery.
Christmas House. This gift shop sells Christmas gifts, food, and decorations throughout the year. From candied apples to Belgian waffles and malt, everyone will have a Christmas mood when browsing through this store, no matter what time of year. There is also a Christmas garden at the back, which kids will surely love.
Godafoss. The Waterfall of the Gods is a wonderful natural creation. Its name comes from a historical episode in which the ruler of the region decided to throw all Icelandic pagan figurines and symbols into a waterfall to symbolize the fact that they abandoned this faith and converted to Christianity.
Akureyri Church. Quite typical of Icelandic architecture. Basalt columns can be seen around many cities on this island as they are locally produced material. The church is located at the top of a hill, so despite a little effort to climb the stairs leading up to it, the views of the city and harbor from above are well worth it.
Akureyri basin. The country has an astounding number of pools and hot tubs scattered everywhere, from the bustling capital to the smallest towns and villages. Akureyri's main swimming pool, located behind the church, allows you to leave your worries and soak in one of the hot pools or relax in the steam room.
Northern Lights. It is one of the main reasons for tourism in Iceland as tourists flock here to observe this natural wonder during the winter months, despite the harsh weather conditions. A great and safe way to see this phenomenon, since Akureyri is very far north and does not have a huge population, it is more likely to see them from here than in other areas of Reykjavik.
Akureyri Museum. This museum is rather small but fascinating nonetheless. Various exhibitions are held here, which change relatively frequently, so visitors never know what to expect. The permanent collection has many Icelandic maps and some objects that explain the history of Akureyri.
