The location of the exhibition was determined by a vote at the General Assembly of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE) on November 27, 2013 in Paris. Initially, the exhibition was to be held from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021 in Dubai (UAE). Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has been pushed back to 2021, and the new dates have been pushed back to October 1, 2021. Although the exhibition will take place in 2021, the organizers will retain the name of Expo 2020 for marketing and branding purposes, which signifies the first time a World Expo has been postponed rather than canceled.

 

The World Expo, first held in London in 1851, was such a success that other countries began organizing events such as the Paris Expo in 1889, for which the Eiffel Tower was designed and built.

 

In 1928, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) was created, which is the main registering body for world exhibitions. World Universal Exhibitions are held every 5 years, lasting at least 6 months.

 

World Expo continues to be the largest and longest running event of global importance. For half a year, the pavilions of the exhibition are visited by millions of visitors who study the expositions of hundreds of participants, including countries, international organizations and corporations.

The venue for World Expo 2020 is the new 438 hectare Dubai Trade Center, designed specifically for the exhibition. Its location is just a few minutes from the new Al Maktoum International Airport, equidistant from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

 

Expo 2020 Dubai is expected to have 25 million visitors, 70% of which will be from overseas. This will be the first in the history of the World Expo where the majority of visitors will be foreigners.
