Car tour with a Russian-speaking guide - 4-5 hours

Just 30 km from the small picturesque port of Katakolon, in the shade of the Sacred Grove among poppies and hyacinths, in orderly rows of moss-covered marble columns, time has stopped. The first sanctuaries of the now forgotten gods were erected by people on this place more than five thousand years ago. The first sports competitions took place almost 3 thousand years ago in 776 BC. and were held every four years for a thousand years. The start and finish lines for competitions in one stage race (192.27 m) are still preserved at the ancient stadium. Athletes competed in pentathlon and fist fighting, and the winners were immortalized in marble statues. Sanctuary of Zeus, decorated in the 5th century BC a grandiose statue of gold and ivory, a description of which historians found in ancient manuscripts, became one of the seven wonders of the world. Today, at this site, you will see the impressive ruins of a Doric temple and the workshop of the sculptor Phidias, who became famous for centuries. The history of the Olympic Games will be told not only by the stadium and the Palestra, the treasury and the altar, where the Olympic flame is lit up to the present day. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia has one of the richest collections in Greece, which contains ceramics, sculptures, armor, jewelry from the archaic to the Roman period.
